New Delhi: Eviction notices have been served to over 200 former Lok Sabha MPs to vacate their bungalows located in Lutyen’s Delhi, who lost in the 2024 general elections and haven’t vacated their official bungalows. The sources in the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry claimed on Monday that the notices have been issued under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act.

According to the rules, the former MPs are required to vacate their official bungalows within a month of the dissolution of the previous Lok Sabha. So far notices have been sent to over 200 former MPs and a process to further send notices to other former MPs is underway.

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry Sends Notices To Former MPs

It is being said that over 200 former MPs have been served eviction notices for overstaying in their official bungalows. As per the sources, if they fail to vacate their official accommodation at the earliest, teams of officials will soon be sent for "forceful eviction".

Although the Lok Sabha Secretariat provides accommodation to the MPs, the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) ministry allots bungalows to the Union ministers in Lutyens' Delhi.

Eviction proceedings are launched if former ministers and former MPs fail to vacate their official bungalows within the stipulated period.

Meanwhile, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has been allotted 83 Lodhi Estate bungalows which were earlier occupied by a former central information commissioner, another source said.

The source said no eviction notice has been issued to any former Union minister for overstaying yet.

Over four former Union ministers, including Smriti Irani, have vacated their official bungalow in Lutyens' Delhi so far.

Irani vacated her official bungalow at 28 Tughlak Crescent in Lutyens' Delhi earlier this month, weeks after she was defeated by Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi parliamentary seat with a margin of over 1.5 lakh votes.
