Statements by the former leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi has been yet again quoted in a fresh letter written by Pakistan to the United Nations. Pakistan's minister of human rights Shireen Mazari has sent a eight page letter citing statements from leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Ghulam Nabi Azad calling the revocation of article 370 'arbitrary'. In the the letter dated 27 August 2019, the minister sought the attention of the United Nation special procedure mandate holders asking the members to investigate the 'violation of human rights' and deaths of people which has been 'acknowledged by mainstream politicians'.
“Acts of violence have even been acknowledged by mainstream politicians, such as the Leader of the Congress Party, Mr. Rahul gandhi who has noted “people dying” in Jammu and Kashmir, in light of events going very wrong there.” The UN special procedure team comprises of independent researchers who are not permanent staff of the organization and are neither on salary. They are believed to be impartial for not having any direct association with any organization as they do not represent anyone's point of view. The letter has been written to eighteen such mandate holders. The recent letter attempts to make its case also on the basis of another veteran Congress Leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad. It reads: “It is worth mentioning the statement by senior Congress Partyleader Mr.Ghulam Nabi Azad. “If the situation is normal then why is the government restricting us from entering the valley?” At one hand the government says things are normal and on the other they impose restrictions. Why this contradictions?”

Letter to the special procedure holders does not mean that UN is bound to investigate the matter, nor has it any legal validity. It lacks details and is primarily based on the statements from politicians. Another leader whose name comes up is former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti. Her tweet has been mentioned in the letter which is more of an accusation than substantial proof as the leader of the PDP had called the abrogation of article 370 “a unilateral decision”.
