Part of Kailash Mansarovar in UNESCO's tentative list of world heritage sites
UNESCO has included the Indian part of Kailash Mansarovar in its tentative list of world heritage sites, sources in the Culture Ministry said Sunday.

UNESCO has included Indian part of Kailash Mansarovar in its tentative list of world herit sites, sources in Culture Ministry said Sunday. It was in April that Archeological Survey of India, which is under Culture Ministry, sent proposal mooted by Ministry of Environment and Forests to UNESCO.
In proposal, Kailash Mansarovar is in mixed category - both as a natural as well as a cultural herit.
Covering an area of 6,836 sq km within India, area is flanked in east by Nepal and bordered by China on rth.

Indian site is part of larger landscape of 31,000 sq km referred to as 'Kailash Sacred Landscape' constituting Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in remote south-western portion of Tibet Automous Region of China and jacent districts in far-western region of Nepal.
Both China and Nepal have proposed landscape as a world herit site to UNESCO.

If it comes through, Uttarakhand, a major transit point of annual Kailash Mansarovar yatra, will benefit as communities living along yatra route can be incorporated in plan to develop sustainable tourism for site.
Indian portion of landscape in State of Uttarakhand comprises four major watersheds viz. Panar-Saryu, Saryu-Ramganga, Gori-Kali and Dhauli-Kali.
