Patna: As water levels in the Ganga River surge, the Bihar government has ordered the immediate closure of 76 schools in flood-prone area of Patna. The decision was announced by District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh which aims to protect students and staff as the flood situation worsens in the region. According to officials, Schools will remain shut until Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Schools in Flood-Prone Area Closed

The schools are spread across various blocks which are flood-prone, including Athamalgola, Badha, Bakhtiyarpur, Mokama, Sadar, Danapur, Fatuha, and Maner. These areas are now considered danger zones due to the river’s rising water levels. The order to close the schools has taken immediate effect to safeguard students and staff.

The closure was announced through a notice from the Bihar Education Department, referencing a prior communication, Letter No. 677 dated August 24, 2024. This precautionary step comes as the Ganga River crosses the danger mark, posing a serious risk to lives in the region.

CWC Forecasts Rise in Water Levels

Flooding in low-lying areas has already begun which has raised concerns among residents. The Central Water Commission has forecast further rises in water levels, prompting the Water Resources Department to intensify monitoring. Engineers and officials have been assigned to patrol embankments at night to ensure the safety of the citizens and affected regions.

Authorities remain on high alert as they continue to monitor the situation closely.
