New Delhi: The Voice of the Global South is a unique platform reflecting the changing world in the 21st century, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address at the inaugural session of the virtual Voice of the Global South Summit. He added that the priorities of the over 100 countries constituting the Global South are similar.

"Geographically, the Global South has always existed, but it is for the first time that it has been given a voice like this,” said PM Modi as he led the inaugural session.

PM Modi underlined that this is the time when the countries of the Global South should unite for the greater global good. He said new challenges are emerging from the events in the West Asia region.

“When India took the presidency of the G20, we took the responsibility to raise the voice for the Global South. In the G20, every leader agreed that sustainable development is the need of the time," the PM added.

"I cannot forget that historic moment when, because of India's efforts, the African Union got permanent membership in the G20," said the PM.

The 2nd VOGSS is to focus on sharing with countries of the Global South—the key outcomes achieved in various G20 meetings over the course of India’s Presidency.

“The 2nd summit will be structured into 10 sessions; the inaugural and concluding sessions will be at the head of state or government level and will be hosted by PM Modi. The theme of the inaugural leaders’ session is “Together, for Everyone’s Growth, with Everyone’s Trust,” and that of the concluding leaders’ session is “Global South: Together for One Future,” according to MEA.
