PM Modi, Amit Shah Speak To Telangana and Andhra Pradesh CMs as Heavy Rains Cause Devastation

New Delhi: In response to severe flooding caused by continuous heavy rains in, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, taking stock of the situation and ensuring necessary assistance.

Union minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar said 119 people are stranded on hillocks and buildings, awaiting rescue.

“Informed Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah ji about the severe situation in Telangana's Khammam & that 110 villages in the district have been submerged, 9 people are stranded on Prakash Nagar hillock, 68 people on Azmeera Thanda hillock in Palair constituency, and 42 others are trapped on buildings,” he posted on X.

9 dead as rains continue in Andhra, floodwater enters houses in Telangana 

On Sunday, the intense rainfall continued for the second consecutive day, leading to significant water-logging, submerging houses and vehicles across both states. The South Central Railway has been heavily impacted, with over 20 trains canceled and more than 30 diverted due to the severe floods.

In Andhra Pradesh, villages such as Ambapuram, Nainavaram, Nunna, and Pathapadu in Vijayawada Rural Mandal have been entirely submerged. Rescue and relief efforts are underway, with police and NDRF teams relocating affected residents to rehabilitation centers. Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha reported that nine people have died as a result of the floods, and over 13,000 individuals have been evacuated from 294 villages across five districts. Rescue teams have successfully saved 600 people from inundated areas.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding Cyclone "Asna," a deep depression over the Arabian Sea, which is expected to move west-northwest away from the Indian coast in the next 24 hours. This system has been responsible for the ongoing heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

In Telangana, heavy rains have disrupted normal life, particularly in Hyderabad, where severe waterlogging has been reported. Rivulets have overflowed, leading to road blockages between villages. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed local officials to remain in their areas and manage relief operations. In Mahabubabad, a young scientist, Dr. Nunavath Ashwini, was found dead after being swept away by floodwaters, and efforts are ongoing to locate her missing father.

Due to the persistent rainfall, IT sector employees in Cyberabad have been advised to work from home, and traffic has been halted on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway due to flooding.

Looking ahead, the weather office has forecast more heavy rainfall in several districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with a red alert issued for 11 districts in Telangana.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in coordination with Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar, has ensured that nine NDRF teams have been dispatched to Telangana to assist with the ongoing relief efforts.
