New Delhi: Amid the ongoing protests across the nation triggered by the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasised the need for swift justice in cases involving crimes against women, stating that it will give them greater assurance of their safety.

Modi also remarked that the judiciary is considered a guardian of the Constitution, and that the Supreme Court and the judiciary have lived up to this responsibility.

PM Modi highlighted that societal concerns such as atrocities against women and child safety are matters of grave concern for society. “Today, atrocities against women, safety of children... are serious concerns of the society. Many strict laws have been made in the country for the safety of women, but we need to make it more active. The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater assurance of safety half the population will get."

Modi emphasised that while there are several stringent laws to deal with crimes against women, there is a need for better coordination within the criminal justice system to ensure swift justice.

Addressing the inaugural session of a national conference of the district judiciary in the presence of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Modi stated that the people of India have never shown any distrust of the Supreme Court or the judiciary.

Describing the imposition of the Emergency as a "dark" period, the prime minister highlighted the judiciary's key role in upholding fundamental rights.

On matters of national security, Modi noted that the judiciary has protected national integrity by prioritizing national interests.
