In a significant development, sources on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet Committee on Security will soon take a call in appointing first Chief of Defence Staff for armed forces. As per sources, NSA-led committee has submitted its report in this regard to Cabinet Committee on Security and PM-led panel will soon take a call and anunce appointment of CDS.
As per recommendations of committee, sources ded that CDS would be given limit of 64 years which is two years more than limit of services chiefs. An implementation committee under National Security visor Ajit Doval h held meetings to decide on structure and responsibilities of CDS.

PM Modi anunced appointment of CDS
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 72nd Independence Day, anunced from ramparts of Red Fort, that country will have a chief of defence staff (CDS) as he of tri-services. Making key anuncement, PM said that CDS will ensure synergy among three services and provide effective leership to m. “Our government has decided to have a Chief of Defence Staff – CDS,” PM Modi h said.
A high-level committee set up to examine gaps in country’s security system in wake of Kargil War in 1999 h called for appointment of a Chief of Defence Staff as a single-point military viser to Defence Minister. A group of ministers analysing required reforms in national security system h also favoured appointing a chief of defence staff. In 2012, Naresh Chandra Task Force h recommended creating post of a permanent chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee. CoSC comprises chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force and senior-most among m acts as its chairman as per existing rm.
