PM Modi, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi pay tribute to Indira Gandhi on her 101st birth anniversary

United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi along with son and Congress President Rahul Gandhi paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Shakti Sthal, on her 101st birth anniversary on Monday, November 19.

Other senior Congress leaders along with the former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari and former President Pranab Mukherjee were also present at Shakti Sthal to pay respects to the first lady Prime Minister of the country.

Born on November 19, 1917, to the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and Kamala Nehru, Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi served as first Indian female Prime Minister for three terms lasting almost 16 years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted his tribute to the late Prime Minister. He wrote: ''Tributes to India's former Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary.''

She was the second longest serving Prime Minister and was well known for path-breaking economic and social reforms, including nationalization of banks. She also abolished privy purses of the erstwhile princely states.

Indira Gandhi, who was hailed as one of the tallest world leaders, was assassinated by her own Sikh bodyguards at her residence on Akbar Road on October 31, 1984.  This came after Operation Bluestar was executed at Amritsar's Golden Temple, wherein Gandhi ordered the Indian Army to confront Sikh separatists who had taken shelter at the holy shrine.
