PM Modi to attend 11th BRICS Summit in Brazil on Nov 13-14; Theme here

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday stated that PM Narendra Modi will be visiting Brasilia in Brazil to attend the 11th BRICS Summit on November 13-14

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday in its briefing which revolved around the Kartarpur Corridor inauguration scheduled for November 9 also spoke about PM Modi's upcoming visit to Brazil for the BRICS Summit. 

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Brasilia, Brazil on 13-14 November to attend the 11th Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa  (BRICS) Summit. The theme of BRICS summit this year is 'Economic Growth for an Innovative Future'"

MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar went on to further state that this will be the Prime Minister's sixth visit to the BRICS Summit. During the briefing Kumar stated, "A large business delegation from India is also expected to be present during the visit, especially to attend the BRICS Business forum where business representatives of all the five countries are present."

The Secretary of Economic Relations in the Ministry of External Affairs, T S Tirumurti, also stated that that the leaders at the summit will aim at boosting overall cooperation among the member countries. In 2019, Brazil will be chairing the meeting which represents over 3.6 billion people on the planet. The member countries also have a combined nominal GDP of USD 16.6 trillion.

Relevance of BRICS

BRICS is the acronym coined for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The BRICS members are known for their significant influence on regional affairs; all are members of G20. Since 2009, the BRICS nations have met annually at formal summits.  Discussions focus on spheres of political and socio-economic coordination, in which member countries have identified business opportunities, economic complementarities, and areas of cooperation.

New areas to be focused in the 11th Summit

The new areas to be focused on are strengthening of cooperation on science, technology, and innovation; enhancement of cooperation on digital economy; invigoration of cooperation on the fight against transnational crime, especially against organized crime, money laundering and drug trafficking; and encouragement to the rapprochement between the New Development Bank (NDB) and the BRICS Business Council. The meeting will be held at the Itamaraty Palace, where the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is located. The Brazilian capital will host the BRICS summit for the second time. The motto for the 11th BRICS summit is 'Economic growth for innovative future'
