After Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka Congress requests State government to not implement NPR
Karnataka Congress has decided to appeal the BJP led state government to not implement National Population Register (NPR) in the state.

legislative unit of Karnataka Congress on Tuesday decided that y will appeal to Karnataka government heed by BJP, to t implement National Population Register (NPR) in state to maintain sovereignty of Constitution.
decision was taken after a party meeting, attended by leers like Siddaramaiah, Dinesh Gundu Rao, G Parameshwara and RV Deshpande.

Earlier in December 2019, former finance minister and senior Congress leer P Chidambaram h called NPR to be a n-controversial issue which was me a "suspect and controversial" because of BJP's approach.
Earlier, Andhra Presh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy h also stated that his government would appeal Centre to reverse conditions of NPR to those prevailing in 2010 as questions proposed in register are causing insecurities in minds of mirities.

Centre Discussing NPR With States
On March 3, Centre informed that it was discussing with state governments preparations for update of National Population Register (NPR) from April 1 to September 30. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai h informed in Lok Sabha that document will be collected during exercise, which will be carried out along with house-listing phase of Census 2021.

" government is in discussion with states having concerns regarding preparation of NPR. demographic and or particulars of each family and individual are to be updated/collected during exercise of updation of NPR. document is to be collected during this exercise," he said while responding to a written question.

What is National Population Register?
NPR, first prepared in 2010 and updated in 2015, is an identity database maintained of all usual residents of country and is prepared at local, sub-District, District, State and National level under provisions of Citizenship Act 1955. Any resident who has resided in a local area for past 6 months or more, or intends to do same has to mandatorily register in NPR. Centre has stated that NPR is a self-declaration where document, bio-metric, etc. required for it.
