Aam Aadmi Party's disgruntled MLA Alka Lamba has said she has decided to resign from the primary membership of the AAP on Friday. The regination comes days after she met with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, fuelling speculation that she would rejoin the Congress party. The AAP MLA from Chandni Chowk had last month announced that she had made up her mind about leaving the party and contesting the upcoming Assembly election as an Independent candidate.

Alka Lamba's resignation tweet

Lamba has been at odds with the Aam Aadmi Party for some time now. After the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, she had sought accountability from its national convener Arvind Kejriwal. She was then removed from the official WhatsApp group of the party lawmakers. She had also refused to campaign for the party in the Lok Sabha polls and refrained from participating in Kejriwal's roadshow after she was asked to walk behind his car during the event.

The former AAP MLA's rough patch

The former AAP MLA first hit a rough patch with the AAP over its decision to pass a resolution to revoke Rajiv Gandhi's Bharat Ratna. Lamba had raised objections to the party's resolution. In December 2018, she said in a tweet that AAP had asked her to support the resolution, which she refused. Lamba had added that she was ready to face any punishment for her actions.

Lamba's political career

Lamba was only 19 and a second-year B.Sc. student when she began her political career in 1994. She joined the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party and was promptly given the responsibility of being Delhi State Girl Convener. In 1995, she contested the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election for the post of President and won by a large margin. In 1996, she worked as All India Girl Convener for NSUI, and in 1997 she was appointed as the President of all India (NSUI).

In 2006, she became a member of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and was appointed as General Secretary of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC)  She was named Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) at the Indian National Congress from 2007 to 2011. Lamba left Indian National Congress after 20 years of services in December 2014 to join the Aam Aadmi Party. In February 2015, Lamba contested in Delhi Legislative Assembly election from Chandni Chowk constituency on Aam Aadmi Party's ticket.
