Congress downplays Priyanka Vadra's 'non-Gandhi party chief' remark; paves way for Rahul

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had in July 2019 said that a non-Gandhi can be the chief of the grand-old party. A year later Congress party has downplayed the remark

Even as internal chaos in Congress vis-a-vis Gandhi leership at helm of affairs, keeps spilling out in open from time to time, on Thursday, party chose to downplay Priyanka Gandhi Vra's remarks regarding a n-Gandhi president for party. Priyanka Gandhi Vra h in July 2019 said that a n-Gandhi can also be chief of grand-old party. However, a year later, as murmurs of Rahul Gandhi at position of party chief returns, Congress said that Vra's remarks were me in a different context. Moreover, it ded that workers throughout country want Wayan MP to return as party chief.

Though book was released recently by Oxford University Press, Congress said Priyanka Gandhi's interview was conducted after Rahul Gandhi stepped down as party president taking responsibility for 2019 Lok Sabha poll drubbing.

Congress loyalists instrospect

As Congress loyalists continue to self-introspect lapses in grand-old party, more voices suggesting organisational amends in party's functioning are coming to fore. Days after a dramatic fight in its virtual meeting, party MP Manish Tewari h on August 8 said that problem of India is absence of viable Opposition and has suggested a series of changes required to revive party. 

Penning an article for a magazine, Manish Tewari - Congress MP from Anandpur Sahib, has batted for organisational change in party. Tewari - considered a loyalist of Gandhi family and Rahul Gandhi - said that uncertainty at top must end. While he lashed out at younger people of party, both naming and shaming m for t aligning to ideological core of Congress, he proclaimed that grand-old party needs to 'revisit its position on secularism' and 'must define its vision of nationalism'. He ded that Congress has never been able to align its own ecomic philosophy with ecomic shift in past.

Though Tewari said that interim president Sonia Gandhi has successfully led party to electoral victories, he also stated that if placing a Nehru-Gandhi at helm of affairs is a 'n-sequitur', n, Congress must hold an election to post of president and to working committee.
