Congress promoting people with wrong intentions: Parlad Singh Sawhney

Senior Delhi Congress leader Parlad Singh Sawhney who switched over to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday, stated that Congress was promoting people with wrong intentions. He cited this as the key reason for quitting the party. Moreover, he claimed that AAP was the best party in Delhi. Sawhney, who was considered a close aide of the late Sheila Dikshit, stressed that he was not interested in getting a ticket from AAP for the upcoming Assembly elections. At the same time, he promised to work towards the development of India’s capital city. 

He said, "I have some drawbacks in the Congress party. They are promoting people with wrong intentions. AAP is the best party in Delhi. They are also helping people who need medical aid.”

Sawhney’s political career 

The 68-year old politician commenced his career by fighting the civil polls from Mori Gate in 1977. However, he was defeated. He finally achieved success in 1983 by winning from the same ward. Winning continuously from the Chandni Chowk assembly constituency from 1998 for four terms, he failed to sustain this momentum in 2015, when he lost to AAP's Alka Lamba. Incidentally, she joined the Congress party recently. Sawhney’s son Purnadeep Singh contested the 2017 civil elections from Chandni Chowk as a Congress candidate. But he was relegated to the second spot as his BJP opponent won.

Arvind Kejriwal welcomes Sawhney’s induction 

Sawhney also mentioned that he heard a lot about the AAP’s development work in any part of Delhi that he visited. The Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal welcomed his entry into the party. On this occasion, he recalled the journey of AAP, which started as a movement. According to him, the Delhi government had done “revolutionary” work since assuming office in 2015.

“AAP started as a movement and there were times when after coming to power parties lost their vision but that is not the case with AAP. We have done revolutionary work since assuming office,” he opined.
