Decision to repeal provisions for madrasas in bid to make edu 'secular': Assam minister
Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that government-run madrasas and Sanskrit tols (schools) in Assam will operate as any other general education institute

Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that government-run mrasas and Sanskrit tols (schools) in state will operate as any or general education institutes and a bill will be tabled during winter session of Assembly. Calling closure of Assam mrasas a historic step, education minister said that this decision aims to secularise entire educational system in state. Assam minister also mentioned that schools in state will open on January 1, 2021, and wearing masks and maintaining social distancing will be mandatory.
Himanta Biswa said, " State Mrassa Education Board will be dissolved from date of declaration of results of examinations to be held for 2021-22 acemic year, and all records, bank accounts and staff will be transferred to Board of Secondary Education."

Stating that Assam government will utilise services of staff of Assam Mrasas Board, state Education Minister said that re will be change in service conditions of staff till retirement. Speaking furr, he informed that cabinet h taken a decision on Sunday to bring a bill for abolition of all government-run Mrasas and Sanskrit tols, but certain decisions can be taken by amending rules and issuing tifications in this regard. All mrassa institutions will be renamed by removing word 'Mrassa' to avoid any confusion in area of higher studies, Himanta Biswa ded.

Assam Minister said at press conference that re will t be any fresh mission to mrasas educational institutions in courses prescribed by Assam Mrasas Board from April 1. 2021. He said, "Students will be mitted to institutes for pursuing relevant courses of state boards." All ological courses in mrassas, including study of Holy Quran, Hith and or aspects of Islamic Studies, will be discontinued from April 1, 2021, and teachers taking ological classes will be trained and engd in teaching of or subjects under general educational system, Biswa ded.

Currently, re are 189 high mrassas under Board of Secondary Education, Assam, while under State Mrassa Board re are four Arabic Colleges, 141 title mrassas, 138 senior mrasas and 230 pre-senior mrasas. staff will be eir transferred to nearest high or higher secondary schools or services will be placed at disposal of Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Nalbari, he said.
