Digvijaya Singh dubs Congress-turned-BJP ex-MLAs as 'traitors', appeals to voters

Ahe of Mhya Presh bypolls, senior Congress leer Digvijaya Singh on Saturday took a dig at party legislators who switched over to BJP. Terming m as "traitors", he alleged that y were paid Rs.35 crore each to shift ir allegiance. All 25 Congress MLAs joined BJP since March 2020 have been given tickets by ruling party in upcoming by-election on vember 2.
In a dig at se candidates, Singh opined that people who voted for m in 2018 Assembly polls deserved to get a "share" of alleged horsetring amount. He called upon people to t vote for se candidates unless latter are willing to part with Rs.35 crore. Moreover, Rajya Sabha MP put up photos of ex-legislators along with a caption 'Traitor rate card', number of votes secured by m in last election and amount "due" to each voter. Earlier in day, Congress party released its manifesto of bypolls.

Fall of Congress government
Kamal Nath government plunged into crisis after Jyotiritya Scindia’s sudden resignation from Congress party on March 10 followed by 22 MP Congress MLAs putting in ir papers. Ruling on a plea of BJP leers seeking an immediate floor test, a two-judge SC bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and Hemant Gupta observed that MP Assembly session should be reconvened on for sole purpose of holding a floor test by show of hands. Most importantly, rebel MLAs were t compelled to attend session.
As Congress party was short of a majority, Kamal Nath anunced his resignation on March 20. Subsequently, Chouhan took oath as MP CM for fourth time. Subsequently, three more Congress leers resigned as legislators and joined BJP. After July's Cabinet expansion, 14 of 22 MLAs who h resigned from Congress are w a part of Shivraj Singh Chouhan's Cabinet.

By-election in 28 constituencies
On September 29, Election Commission of India anunced by-election in 28 MP Assembly constituencies- Joura, Sumawali, Morena, Dimani, Ambah, Mehgaon, Goh, Gwalior, Gwalior East, Dabra, Bhander, Karera, Pohari, Bamori, Ashok Nagar, Mungaoli, Surkhi, Malhara, Anuppur, Sanchi, Biaora, Agar, Hatpipliya, Mandhata, Nepanagar, Bnawar, Sanwer and Suwasra. While bypolls were necessitated in 25 seats due to resignation of Congress MLAs, three or constituencies will also go to polls as sitting legislators passed away. To retain power in MP, BJP needs to win only 9 out of 28 seats. counting of votes is scheduled for vember 10.
