Digvijaya Singh slams insulting exam question alleging Gandhi suicide

Slamming the Gujarat government for the shocking question on Gandhiji's demise, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, on Monday, stated that the institution alleging the Mahatma's suicide was funded by the state government. He questioned if the state will stop funding the institution. He also demanded whether authorities will investigate and arrest the responsible teacher who set the question. Expressing his sorrow, he said that it was sad that the Mahatma was insulted in his own birthplace.

Gandhiji's suicide question irks authorities

Earlier in the day, it was revealed that a question had been posed in a school exam on how Mahatma Gandhi committed suicide, shocking Gujarat education authorities, according to PTI. An inquiry has been initiated into the case. Another question about bootlegging in dry Gujarat has also irked the education officials. This development comes barely days after the world celebrated Gandhiji's 150th anniversary.

The shocking questions

"Gandhijiye aapghaat karwa maate shu karyu?" (How did Gandhiji commit suicide?) — was the question asked in Gujarati to the Class 9 students during an internal assessment examination of schools run under the banner of 'Sufalam Shala Vikas Sankul', an official said. Another question in an exam paper of Class 12 students was about "Writing a letter to the district police chief complaining about the rise in the sale of liquor in your area and nuisance created by bootleggers".

The questions were set by the Sufalam Shala Vikas Sankul which is a collection of some self-financed schools and educational institutions getting government grants in Gandhinagar.

"A cluster of self-financed schools and those getting grants included these two questions for internal assessment exams held on Saturday. These questions are highly objectionable, and we have initiated an inquiry. Action will be taken after the report comes in," Gandhinagar's district education officer Bharat Vadher said. The question papers were set by the management of these schools, run under the banner of Sufalam Shala Vikas Sankul, and the State education department had nothing to do with it, he added.
