West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh on Friday downplayed resolution passed by state Assembly seeking repeal of  farm laws passed by Parliament. According to him, this initiative would make difference similar to outcome of previous resolutions passed against Citizenship Amendment Act and demonetisation. Speaking on floor of state Assembly a day earlier, WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed to or opposition parties to back farmers protesting against agrarian laws. She called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately call a meeting of all Chief Ministers to discuss farm legislation. Moreover, TMC supremo made it clear that Centre's purported attempt to brand agitating farmers as "terrorists" or "Khalistanis" in wake of Republic Day violence shall t be accepted.

Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 aims at freeing  farmers from constraints of state Agriculture Produce Market Committees whereby y would be able to sell ir produce anywhere. Meanwhile,  Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 protects and empowers farmers to eng with processors, wholesalers, large retailers, exporters for farm services. This entails provision of contract farming.

Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 specifies that supply of foodstuffs including cereals, pulses, potato, edible oilseeds, and oils shall be regulated only under exceptional circumstances. TMC was one of opposition parties who had petitioned President Ram Nath Kovind to t give assent to farm bills after y were cleared in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
