J&K BIFURCATED: Amit Shah proposes Ladakh & J&K to be separate Union Territories; J&K to have legislature, not Ladakh

On Monday, Home Minister Amit Shah made a statement in the Rajya Sabha on Jammu and Kashmir where he moved a proposal that Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir will be separate Union Territories. As per the motion, J&K is proposed to have a legislature, while Ladakh is not.

He had earlier moved a proposal by the government that recommended the revocation of Article 370.

The proposals moved by the Home Minister has led to an uproar in the Rajya Sabha by the Opposition. 

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu had earlier waived the rules of advance notice for speaking on the issue of J&K Reservation Bill. He said the bill and the situation in Kashmir will be discussed together. Ahead of Shah's speech, the Opposition tried to block his address. They had tried to create a ruckus. 

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had said, "Entire valley is under curfew, political leaders including three former chief ministers are under house arrest. There is a war-like situation in the state, so this should be discussed on priority." TMC's Derek O' Brien also tried to put across his party's view.

Prologue to Amit Shah's Rajya Sabha announcement

Shah joined PM Narendra Modi during the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security and later in the Cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister's residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. Shah had also held a one-hour meeting with Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad before his meeting with the Prime Minister.
