Maharashtra follows Kerala and Punjab in anti-CAA row, mulls passing resolution against it

After Kerala and Punjab, the Maha Vikas Agadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra is also considering to move a resolution against the CAA in the state Assembly

After Kerala and Punjab, Maha Vikas Agi (MVA) government in Maharashtra is also considering to move a resolution against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 in  state Assembly. Speaking to news ncy ANI, Congress spokesperson Raju Waghmare said, "Our senior party leer Balasaheb Thorat has also shared his stand on CAA. Even Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has said that we are against CAA. As far as resolution against CAA is concerned, our senior leers of MVA will sit toger and decide."

Maharashtra to follow Kerala, Punjab's footsteps?

If this happens, n Maharashtra will be third state to pass a resolution against CAA, which grants citizenship to n-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Banglesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.  Kerala government earlier this week moved Supreme Court against CAA, seeking to declare it “violative of principles of equality, freedom and secularism enshrined in Constitution”. It was first State government to challenge Act and Kerala Assembly was first to pass a resolution against law. Following in sourn state’s footsteps, Punjab Assembly on Friday passed a resolution demanding to scrap contentious law.

Meanwhile, emphasising that CAA is 'unconstitutional,' Senior vocate and Congress leer Kapil Sibal said that every state Assembly has constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek CAA's withdrawal. He ded that it would be problematic to oppose CAA if law is declared to be 'constitutional' by Supreme Court.

Earlier speaking at Kerala Literature Festival on Saturday, Congress leer h said that constitutionally state can say that it will t implement amended Citizenship Act, as doing so will be "unconstitutional". Kerala government has also approached Supreme Court against CAA following pass of a resolution against it in state Assembly. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has also anunced that Congress state government is going to join Kerala in Supreme Court in case.
