This development has come weeks after Rahul Gandhi offered to resign as the Congress president on May 25 taking moral responsibility for the defeat embarrassing defeat of the party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections at the hands of Narendra Modi-led by BJP , however, his offer was rejected by the members of the party during the CWC meeting.

Meanwhile, a section of top party leadership had been urging him to take back his decision to resign and continue as the Congress chief. On Monday, Chief Ministers of the Congress-ruled states had met Gandhi at his residence and has pleaded him to change his decision. However, sources had told that Rahul Gandhi did not bulge on his resignation decision even after meeting the senior party leadership.

Amid the resignation drama, speculations were also high that Congress workers from Telangana were vouching for UP General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi to take on as the party chief. Until the party chooses a new president, Motilal Vora will remain the interim president.
