MCD Election Results LIVE: AAP ends 15-year BJP rule; Congress puts poor show

The counting of votes for 250 seats of the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi commenced at 8 am today. A turnout of 50.48% was recorded in the MCD polls held on December 4, which was lower than the previous election. While BJP which has ruled the MCD since 2007 is seeking a fourth term, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has predicted over 230 seats for his party.

BJP calls meeting with winning councillors of MCD elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday called a meeting of its key office bearers at the BJP headquarters at 5:30 pm today, informed the BJP sources. Another meeting of the party's winning councillors of the MCD elections has been called.

This development comes after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 134 of the total 250 wards in the national capital's civic body polls, uprooting 15-year rule by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP won 104 wards. and Congress was reduced to nine, which means its base in Delhi continues to erode.

AAP dislodges BJP in MCD by winning 134 wards

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) poll results for all 250 wards were declared on Wednesday with the AAP gaining majority by winning 134 while the BJP bagged 104.

The Congress managed to win just nine wards. 

The MCD has 250 wards and the simple majority mark is 126.

The BJP, which exit polls predicted would suffer a massive defeat, put up a spirited fight, winning 104 wards.

Three Independent candidates, including Shakeela Begum from Seelampur in northeast Delhi, have also won.

Kejriwal predicts over 230 seats for AAP

Addressing a press conference on November 29, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal predicted that AAP will win more than 230 out of 250 seats in the MCD polls. He also announced that Resident Welfare Associations shall be given 'mini-councillor' status if AAP comes to power in the civic body which has been ruled by BJP. Thus, the AAP supremo appealed to the RWAs to canvass for his party in their respective jurisdictions.

AAP makes big allegation

The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday alleged that 668 voters were not allowed to cast their vote at a polling booth in Karol Bagh here in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections as their names were not on the electoral list. The party's MLA from Karol Bagh, Vishesh Ravi, demanded re-election at the booth and strict action against the officials for the "mess".

"According to the electoral roll and the Nagar Nigam Chunav app, a total of 668 voters from SP Mukherjee Market, Faiz Road were supposed to cast their vote in booth no. 118, Ward-82, AC-23 at the polling station - Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya Plot No.6 Jhandewalan. But from the morning the voters were made to run from pillar to post as this booth didn't have the list of voters," he claimed.

First civic election after delimitation

According to data shared by the State Election Commission officials, the total number of voters in Delhi is 1,45,05,358 — 78,93,418 males, 66,10,879 females and 1,061 transgender people. The MCD election was the first civic election after the fresh delimitation exercise, and the poll was held days after the first phase of the Gujarat assembly elections, and a day ahead of its second phase. Authorities had set up 13,638 polling stations across Delhi for the exercise. This was also the first civic polls held in the national capital after the February 2020 riots in Delhi, and according to data shared by officials,

3,360 booths, spanning 493 locations, were identified in critical or sensitive categories. Sixty-eight model polling stations and as many pink polling stations were established for the quality experience of voters. Barring a few stray incidents of MCC (model code of conduct) violations and “a couple of other scattered incidents of impersonation”, the polling remained peaceful and no untoward incident of any kind was reported from anywhere, the SEC said in a statement. This year, the highest polling percentage (65.72) has been recorded in ward no. 5 (Bakhtawarpur), while the lowest (33.74 per cent) was registered in ward no.145 (Andrews Ganj).

MCD polls

BJP which has ruled the Municipal Corporation of Delhi since 2007 is seeking a fourth term. While the civic body was trifurcated into NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC in 2012, it was reunified earlier this year. Although BJP and AAP are contesting all 250 seats, Congress candidates are in the fray in only 247 seats. A turnout of 50.48% was recorded in the MCD polls held on December 4, which was lower than the previous election. In the 2017 civic election, the BJP won 181 of the 270 wards. On the other hand, AAP and Congress won 48 and 27 wards respectively.

Counting of votes to begin at 8 am

Authorities here are all geared up for the counting of votes polled in the Delhi municipal elections, with officials saying 42 centres have been set up for the Wednesday exercise which will begin at 8 am amid tight security. There are 250 wards in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and 1,349 candidates are in the fray in this election. 

The centres are located in areas, including, Shastri Park, Yamuna Vihar, Mayur Vihar, Nand Nagari, Dwarka, Okhla, Mangolpuri, Pitampura, Alipur and Model Town. Tight security arrangements have been made at all the centres with 20 companies of Central Armed Police Forces and more than 10,000 police personnel deployed for the day at the centres, police officials said.

Controversies plague AAP ahead of polls

In the run-up to the MCD polls, AAP was accused of giving tickets in lieu of money. On November 15, AAP MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi's alleged brother-in-law Om Singh, his PA Shiv Shankar Pandey and associate Prince Raghuvanshi were arrested by the Delhi ACB for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs.90 lakh from the husband of a ticket aspirant. Subsequently, BJP Lok Sabha MP Ramesh Bidhuri claimed that AAP sold 90% of its tickets in lieu of bribes ranging from Rs 70 lakh to Rs 1 crore. The party also released a sting in which AAP leader Bindu Sriram was asked to pay Rs.80 lakh to bag the ticket from the Rohini-D ward.
