The Meghalaya Assembly witnessed heated arguments between the ruling party NPP and the opposition party Congress over the resumption of coal mining in the state

Meghalaya Assembly witnessed heated arguments on Wednesday, as ruling party NPP (National People’s Party) and opposition blamed each or for delay resumption of coal mining in state. Congress leer Dr. Mukul Sangma attacked Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government. He said that government is t serious about starting legal mining in state. leer also said that government wants illegalities to happen in process that suits party's interests.

CM blames opposition for delay 

In response, Chief Minister Conr K Sangma blamed Congress for t taking any action to resolve ban on coal mining. “Let us compare in last five years and let us compare in last one and a half year, I think we kw whose intent is wanting. I want to ask what happened in last five years, why didn’t y move ( issue) expeditiously. When finally we have moved forward I think everybody should be happy about it,” Chief Minister said. He also said that NPP government worked overtime to resolve ban.

Congress questions delay in action over  court ruling

Congress leer Mukul Saxena n questioned delay of government to work on court’s ruling. discussion ended when Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stood up and asked speaker to take action and t to let such situations arise again in parliament. “ We are t here to break rules,” he said. He also vised opposition to bring up issues of importance in form of special discussions in parliament. According to sources, discussion took more than an hour in parliament which led to House t being able to take up or issues in  time allotted for question hour.

Coal Mining to resume in Meghalaya

In an earlier discussion, when questioned by Mawphlang MLA SK Sunn, Chief Minister of Meghalaya said that Supreme Court h passed an order on July 3, that stated mining operations undertaken by tribals or or owners of hills districts of Meghalaya in accordance with mining lease obtained from state of Meghalaya as per Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 and Mineral Concession Rules, 1960.  2014-ban order of National Green Tribunal (NGT) shall t come in its way of carrying mining operations. Chief Minister also said that mining shall be allowed in state subject to compliance of provisions of MMDR Act, 1957, Mines Act, 1952, Coal Mines Regulation, 2017 and Environment (Protection) Act.
