Mehbooba Mufti issues 'explanation' after backlash on asking Taliban to follow Sharia law

After facing a backlash for asking the Taliban to follow the Sharia law in Afghanistan, PDP supremo Mehbooba Mufti was forced to issue a clarification.

After facing backlash from BJP for asking Taliban to follow  Sharia law in Afghanistan, PDP supremo Mehbooba Mufti was forced to issue a clarification on Thursday. Taking to Twitter, she asserted that her statement was deliberately distorted but ackwledged that most countries who claim to uphold Sharia law have failed to imbibe its true values. Highlighting that Medina model of governance gave equal rights to men, women and mirities especially in terms of property and marri. 

Mehbooba Mufti observed, "Hazrat Khija Tul Kubra, Prophet SWA first wife was an independent & successful businesswoman. Hazrat Ayesha Siddique led Battle of Camel and heed a force of 13,000 soldiers. Islamic history is full of such examples of emancipated and empowered women."

At same time, she lamented that Muslims are being asked to prove that y don't stand for violence. According to her, this was owing to rising Islamophobia in country because of ongoing crisis in Afghanistan. Ar former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah also courted controversy after he ackwledged Taliban regime and expressed hope that it will run a "good government". 

A day earlier, Mehbooba Mufti described rise of Taliban as a "reality" and vised m against following ir regressive interpretation of Sharia law. Talking to media, she said, "ir im during ir first term was anti-human rights. If y want to form government in Afghanistan w, y should follow real Sharia law and t ir interpretation. In Quran, women, children and elderly have rights. If y want to follow Medina model of governance, y can set an example for entire world. Only n can  countries of world can do business with m".

Taliban takeover

After Taliban stormed into Kabul on August 15, Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani resigned and fled country with his associates. Since n, several persons have lost ir lives in chaos at Hamid Karzai International Airport with thousands of people desperately trying to flee country. This includes death of at least 169 Afghans, 11 US Marines, a US Navy sailor, and a US Army soldier in a suicide bombing at Abbey Gate of Kabul airport on August 26. This led to US airstrikes on terrorists belonging to ISIS-K which claimed responsibility for this attack.

On August 31, Taliban gained control of Kabul airport after last batch of US troops left Afghanistan. Though  Taliban promised to form an "inclusive" government to run Afghanistan, it anunced a 33-member caretaker Cabinet on Tuesday which neir has women r mainstream politicians from previous regimes. While Mullah Mohamm Hassan Akhund, chief of Taliban's Rehbari Shura, is new Prime Minister, he has two deputies in Mullah Barar and Mawlavi Hanafi. Ar terrorist Sirajuddin Haqqani is Interior Minister whereas Taliban founder Mullah Omar's son Mullah Yaqoob has been named Defence Minister.
