Modi-Xi meet to be informal; Congress says it's 'legalese, ambiguous'

Days ahead of the second informal summit between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Chennai, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Wednesday has taken to Twitter to opine on their meeting. Raking the Kashmir issue, the Congress leader stated that the bilateral talks between India and China are likely to be "platitudinous, rhetorical, shrouded in diplomatic legalese and ambiguity" until two core issues of Kashmir and Pakistan are on the table. However, he added that the meeting between PM Modi and Xi Jinping must not stop, asserting that it is important to try and steer China to border issues and eco-cooperation.

List of agendas during Modi-Xi meet

However, top sources have dismissed Congress leader Singhvi's claims on PM Modi-Xi meet. Top sources have told news agency ANI that there is no agreement, Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) and joint communique are expected to be signed between India and China during Xi Jinping's visit, maintaining that is is an informal summit. Sources have further asserted that there is no specific agenda on the meeting between the two leaders. PM Modi is likely to hold one-to-one and delegation-level talks with the Chinese President with focus on improving people-to-people contact between India and China. PM Modi is also likely to talk on how to maintain peace and tranquillity on the India-China border with Xi Jinping.

PM Modi-Xi Jinping meet

Minister of External Affairs on Wednesday released the statement declaring the dates for the second informal summit between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. MEA stated that the Chinese will be visiting Chennai's Mamallapuram from October 11 to 12. The statement also said that the forthcoming Chennai Informal Summit "will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to continue their discussions on overarching issues of bilateral, regional and global importance". The two world leaders will exchange views on deepening India-China Closer Development Partnership.
