Amid stir,Ram Vilas Pawan says 'no plans to include lawyers under Consumer Protection Act'

Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Saturday has clarified that there is no proposal to include lawyers within the ambit of the Consumer Protection Act

Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Saturday has clarified that re is proposal to include lawyers within ambit of Consumer Protection Act. This statement of Paswan comes after Bar Council of India (BCD) and Bar Council of Delhi h written to Paswan, opposing contemplation of Centre to include lawyers under ambit of Consumer Protection Act.

Speaking to media Union Consumer Affairs Minister Paswan said, "I would like to clarify that re is proposal to include legal services in rules being framed under Act. Furr, at present, re is proposal to amend definition of 'services' in Consumer Protection Act, 2019."

Recently, Delhi High Court Bar Association also wore a white ribbon to mark ir protest against it. Bar councils said that bringing vocates under ambit of Act will hamper ir professional activities and encour frivolous complaints.

Bar Council to Union Consumer Affairs Minister

Earlier on March 12, Bar Council of India h expressed "anguish" and "resentment" on behalf of over twenty lakh vocates of country at government's decision to bring lawyers within purview of Consumer Protection Act.

BCI in its letter to Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, requested that proposal be withdrawn or else lawyer fraternity would be left with option but to launch a protest against it.

"With utmost humility, we would like to inform your good self that in case our demand is disregarded, entire vocates fraternity of country will be left with option but to come on ros with a massive agitation against draconian proposal to bring vocates within applicability of Consumer Protection Act," apex bar body said.

BCI letter said it was a judicially ackwledged fact that vocates are t part of any tre, commerce or industry r does ir work fall within ambit of Service Tax Act but it was merely an activity in aid and assistance of justice ministration system.
