If CAA is passed, no state can say 'I won't implement', it's unconstitutional: Kapil Sibal

Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Saturday addressed the Kerala Literature Festival and stated that if CAA is passed, no state can decline to implement it

Amid ongoing anti-CAA protests in many parts of country, Congress leer Kapil Sibal spoke at ongoing Kerala Literature Festival and stated that state can deny implementation of Citizenship Amendement Act as it has alrey been passed.

In his statement, Sibal said, " If CAA is passed, state can say 'I will t implement it'. It is t possible and is unconstitutional."

Sibal's remark comes after Punjab Congress government passed a resolution in state Assembly against amended Citizenship Act (CAA). resolution was moved by State Minister Brahm Mohindra in Congress-led Assembly. Punjab h called a two-day special Assembly session on Thursday and Friday.

" CAA enacted by Parliament has caused countrywide anguish and social unrest with widespre protests all over country. state of Punjab also witnessed protests against this legislation, which were peaceful and involved all segments of our society," Mohindra said while reing out resolution.

Shortly after passing a resolution against bill, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh h stated on Friday that his government is likely to approach Supreme Court over issue. 

Captain Amarinder Singh said that PM Modi-led government will have to make necessary amendments to CAA if it has to be implemented in Punjab and or states opposing Act. Outside state Assembly he said, "Like Kerala, our government will also approach Supreme Court on issue,"

Kerala Assembly passes anti-CAA resolution

Along with moving to Supreme Court, earlier in month, Kerala Assembly passed a resolution for t implementing Act in state and has also written to central government regarding same. Moreover, Vijayan has written to eleven state governments who are against CAA to follow same pathway against Act, but goverr Arif Mohamm Khan has called resolution 'unconstitutional'. LDF which rules state has taken a firm stance against CAA and NRC, staging several protests across state.
