Owaisi slams RSS chief's take on lynching, says 'Victims were Indians'

Slamming RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for taking issue with the term 'lynching' rather than the acts itself, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday, reminded Bhagwat that the victims of lynching were Indians. He questioned who had garlanded the convicts and draped them in the triclour. Taking a shot at Bhopal BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya, he stated that we now had a 'Godse-loving' MP. He clarified that Bhagwat had not directed to stop lynching, but had said 'don't call it that'.

'Lynching is a western construct': Bhagwat

Earlier in the day, the RSS chief had stated that 'lynchings' should not be used to defame the country while addressing the Vijayadasami function at Nagpur. He asserted that 'lynching' is a foreign concept. He also said that such incidents defame India and its citizens. He said that incidents of lynching require law agencies to intervene.

"Lynching is not the word from Indian ethos. Its origin is from a story in a separate religious text. We Indians trust in brotherhood. Don't impose such terms on Indians," he said.

Owaisi on Tabrez Ansari lynching

Previously too Owaisi has slammed the BJP government for lynching-related deaths. Earlier in September, he had cited the Tabrez Ansari case. He had condemned the Jharkhand police's inaction in the case. Slamming religious intolerance, he had said that the accused were being protected by the Centre.

"The thing is that had Tabrez Ansari been rescued when he was beaten for 7 hours, his life would have been saved, had he taken to the hospital immediately, his life would have been saved. From day 1 that the Police allowed Ansari to be dead for the whole night. He was forced to chant all the slogans against the basic tenets of Islam. This is a pattern of BJP govt that accused are being protected, the criminal cases of mob-lynching are diluted. This is the attitude of BJP govt to protect the accuse who has beaten Dalits and Muslims. Tabrez Ansari died because of his head injury - we are forgetting this," he said to ANI.
