Parliament LIVE: RS Chairman pulls up MPs for disruption, extends Sanjay Singh suspension

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced the extension of the suspension of AAP MP Sanjay Singh. He said, "I find it expedient to refer the matter to the Committee of Privileges...suspension order dated 24th July 2023 may continue beyond the current session till the Council has the benefit of recommendation by the Committee of Privileges."

AAP MP Raghav Chadha has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha pending a privilege committee report. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced and said, "I suspend Raghav Chadha from the service of the Council till the Council has the benefit of the report by the Committee of Privileges."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said sedition will be completely repealed in the Bill which if passed will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Addressing the Lok Sabha, Shah said, "The British introduced sedition laws to safeguard their authority. I want to convey to this esteemed House that our government has taken a historic decision. We are fully repealing the Sedition Law. In our democracy, everyone has the right to speech. We completely repealing sedition law." "The three Bills that I am moving today include the principle law for the criminal justice system. One is Indian Penal Code which was formed in 1860, the second is Criminal Procedure Code which was formed in 1898 and the third is Indian Evidence Act, which was formed in 1872. We will end these laws today, which were brought by the British," says Union Home Minister Amit Shah said. 

Union Minister Amit Shah said in the Lok Sabha that the new bill on IPC will completely repeal the offence of sedition. He introduced three bills in Lok Sabha to replace the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act. 

Amit Shah tabled the CrPC code in Lok Sabha as Opposition MPs boycott proceedings over Congress MP Adhi Ranjan's suspension from House.

LoP in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of the suspension of Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and said, "He has been suspended on a flimsy ground. He just said 'Nirav Modi'. Nirav means calm, silent. You suspend him over that?..."

Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge raised the matter of Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's suspension from Lok Sabha. He was suspended on Thursday for his ‘unruly’ conduct and for allegedly attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the House during his no-trust motion. The suspension motion was brought in the Parliament by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi. The matter regarding Chowdary’s suspension is pending before the privileges committee.

Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said, "Supreme Court had given a decision in this regard...So we brought the law according to the decision of the Supreme Court...In the new Bill, we are forming a Search Committee which will be led by the Cabinet Secretary...After that, there will be a Selection Committee which will be led by the Prime Minister. What is wrong with that?..."

He introduced the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023 in the Rajya Sabha on August 10, to regulate the appointment, conditions of service and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners and the procedure for transaction of business by the Election Commission.

On suspension of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Lok Sabha, Congress MP Manish Tewari says, "As per Section 105(1) of the Constitution, every MP has the freedom of speech in Parliament. If by misusing the power of the majority any MP is suspended like this, it is very unfortunate for democracy. This is a fit case to approach the Supreme Court..."

On Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's suspension from the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Manickam Tagore said, "It is undemocratic, worst of its kind in 75 years of Parliamentary history. It has never happened that a leader of the largest Opposition party has been suspended without even questioning...Modi & Amit Shah are destroying the Parliamentary procedures and INDIA alliance is going to have a meeting now. We are going to take up those issues in a strong way. We are all agitated...This will not be tolerated. We will agitate and protest against these kinds of decisions."

On Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's suspension from the House, Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje said, "What Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury did yesterday was very wrong...What did he want to say? 140 crores people of the country were watching you...This was not an insult to the BJP or the Govt, you are trying to insult the Parliament..."

A Congress Lok Sabha MPs meeting was called by CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi at 10.30 AM today to discuss the suspension of Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. The meeting has been called at the CPP office at the Parliament.
