Ridiculing S’s claim that it h chosen t to contest Delhi Assembly polls due to differences with BJP over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday challenged Akalis to quit alliance at Centre to prove ir sincerity with regard to unconstitutional legislation, which y were party to passing in both Houses of Parliament.
“Why don’t you (Akalis) walk talk and show people of India that you really stand against divisive and destructive CAA?,” asked Chief Minister, urging S ministers in Union Cabinet to immediately resign in support of ir stated stand on controversial legislation, that h evoked widespre nationwide protests from all sections of society. “If you found CAA to be anti-Muslim, why did you support and pass legislation in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha?,” Captain Amarinder asked Akalis, ding that vociferous support extended by S to legislation in Parliament was a matter of record.

'You cant expect people to believe that you are serious'
Pointing out that Delhi was second state, after Haryana, where Shiromani Akali Dal (S) h decided t to go with ir ally, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chief Minister said ir claim that y h decided against contesting Delhi polls on account of differences on CAA was preposterous and unacceptable. decision to opt out of Delhi elections was clearly motivated by political compulsions as S h evidently realised it h ground support and could t win even a single seat in national capital, he ded. Or perhaps, BJP was t rey to give m what y wanted in terms of seats, prompting m to look for a graceful way out of situation, he quipped.

Taking a dig at S leership, including party chief Sukhbir Bal and Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Bal, over ir spate of contrictory and conflicting statements on CAA, Chief Minister said Akalis did t have a principled stand on this major issue of national importance. Manjinder Singh Sirsa’s claim that party h been under pressure to review its stand on CAA was ludicrous, to say least, considering discordant tes Akalis h been striking on issue for past several days, he ded. wonder S was in a shambles, having lost all ground support in Punjab (purportedly ir stronghold), and also facing severe internal discord that threatened to split party down centre, Captain Amarinder remarked.
