Rebel AAP MLA Alka Lamba disqualified from Delhi assembly

Days after quitting AAP, Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba has been disqualified by Delhi Speaker Ram Niwas Goel on Thursday under the anti-defection law.

Days after quitting the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) on Twitter, Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba has been disqualified by Delhi Speaker Ram Niwas Goel on Thursday from the Assembly under the anti-defection law. As per a statement released in the matter, Alka Lamba's disqualification will take effect from September 6. Following her disqualification from Delhi assembly, the Chandni Chowk Assembly seat has fallen vacant.

The development has come after AAP legislator Saurabh Bharadwaj filed a petition, and said that Alka Lamba has joined the Congress party after quitting the Arvind Kejriwal-led party.

"Alka Lamba, the Respondent in this case, an elected Member of the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, elected from Chandni Chowk (Assembly Constituency No. 20) has become subject to disqualification under Paragraph 2 (1) (a) of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution," the statement said, as reported by news agency PTI.

Former AAP MLAs Kapil Mishra, Sandeep Kumar, Anil Bajpai and Devendra Sehrawat were disqualified from the Delhi assembly under the anti-defection law.

Alka Lamba resigns

Alka Lamba, on September 6, took to Twitter and posted her resignation from the primary membership of the AAP. Her decision had come following her meeting with Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi. After her resignation, reports have emerged that she joined the Congress party. She was a Congress party leader for over 20 years before she joined AAP in 2014.
