Sitaram Yechury: Judicial mechanism for people excluded from NRC
Sitaram Yechury has demanded a judicial mechanism for people who were excluded from the final NRC list in Assam, 19 lakhs risked being left without a state.

Communist Party of India (CPI-M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has demanded a judicial mechanism for people who were excluded from final National Register for Citizens (NRC) list, inste of moving to Foreigners Tribunal. Yechury said that people who were excluded from NRC list published on Saturday, have been given right to appeal, inste of moving to Foreigners Tribunal. Yechury stated people excluded from list should t be sent to detention camps. He furr stated that people in se camps are me to live under inhuman conditions and virtually have rights.

"Foreigners Tribunal is t a judicial authority"
Yechury furr stated, “ Foreigners Tribunal is t a judicial authority; it is an executive body that functions under government. I do t expect that any justice will be done by Foreigners Tribunal. We want a judicial mechanism to be set up which will pursue all appeals. mechanism will take correct decision on basis of that.”

“This is a big human trdy; more than 19 lakh people are facing statelessness. y are t citizens of Assam according to NRC final list. Government has t specified excluded person’s status. What we demand is that se people should be allowed to continue living re till ir appeal is disposed of by judicial authority,” Yechury ded.
A total of 3.29 crore people h applied for NRC, with just over 3.11 crore making it to final list. final list of NRC in Assam was published on Saturday with close to 19 lakh people being excluded from list. Those excluded can w approach High Courts and Supreme Court, with Foreigners Tribunal being only ncy that can deem someone a foreigner. This exclusion of 19 lakhs is a major decrease from previous exclusion of 40 lakhs in second draft published in July 2018.

National Register for Citizens explained
NRC was first prepared in 1951 under purview of Census Act, 1948. A process to update list was started in 2013 and ended with receipt of forms by NRC authorities on August 31, 2015. process is aimed at separating genuine Indian citizens from undocumented immigrants living in Assam. As per NRC terms, a resident has to prove that y or ir ancestors entered Assam before midnight on March 24, 1971. Anyone failing to do so will be declared a foreigner.
