Smriti Irani, Scindia hail 'historic' ground-breaking ceremony of new Parliament building

Union Minister Smriti Irani called it a 'historic day' for India as Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid foundation stone of new Parliament building. She asserted that new Parliament building will be a symbol of country's diverse culture, ancient herit, rich tritions and vibrant democracy.

Echoing same sentiment, Dr. Mahesh Sharma, member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MP Jyotiritya Scindia, also took to ir Twitter handle to hail big event.

"This is a day of pride for over 130 crore Indians when we are witnessing this historic moment. new Parliament building is an example of co-existence of new and old. This is an effort to make changes within oneself in accordance with time and needs," Prime Minister said. 

Features of New Parliament building

new building will have an area of 64,500 square metres. It will also have a grand Constitution Hall to showcase India's democratic herit, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking .

In new building, Lok Sabha chamber will have a seating capacity for 888 members, while Rajya Sabha will have 384 seats for members. Lok Sabha chamber will have an option to increase its sitting capacity to 1,224 members during joint sessions.

This has been done keeping in mind future increase in number of members for two houses. At present, Lok Sabha has a sanctioned strength of 543 members and Rajya Sabha 245. In September this year, Tata Projects Limited won bid to construct new Parliament building. new building will be constructed close to existing one under Central Vista redevelopment project.
