SP's Abu Azmi lauds Maha Vikas Aghadi government for giving 5% reservation to Muslims

Speaking on big anuncement by Maha Vikas Aghi government to give 5% reservations for Muslims in education, Samajwi Party's Abu Azmi lauded Maharashtra Government, stating that this move would t only benefit Muslims but country as a whole. "Today, people say that Muslims are backward, truth is that education has become so expensive. This reservation will prove as a great benefit for Muslims who could t afford education," said Abu Azmi.

"Reservation on basis of religion is t wrong. High Court permits 5%. At least give initial 5% for education and n later on ar 5% will be given for jobs. This will t only help in progress of Muslims. But country. This should be done for benefit of country," ded Abu Azmi.
Muslim reservation in Maharashtra
On Friday, in a massive development, Maha Vikas Aghi government has anunced in Maharashtra Legislative Council a 5% reservation for Muslims in school and colleges. State minister for mirity affairs, Nawab Malik in response to Congress legislator Shar Ranpise said in Council that a bill will be introduced and government will ensure its smooth pass. Malik ded that action will be taken to ensure pass before beginning of missions for acemic year.

Earlier in January, Malik h confirmed that move was in talks since Common Minimum Programme (CMP) but h t been finalised yet. In spite of reservation in Maharashtra breaching 70%, sources on January 31, reported that Thackeray-led Aghi government is preparing to introduce a Muslim-based reservation in state. Incidentally, a Muslim reservation was mentioned in Congress and NCP's manifesto.
previous Congress-NCP government h passed an ordinance granting a 5% quota to Muslims in 2014, as per reports. But in 2018, BJP-Shiv Sena government ruled out reservations for Muslims on religious grounds citing various Supreme Court and high court rulings.
