After eleven days into protests and five rounds of deliberations, farmers still demand withdrawal of farm laws, despite government assurance on continuation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) and APMC Mandi system and also asserting willingness to dress concerns of farmers. However, farmers' unions have however decided to go ahe with Bharat Bandh on December 8 with several political parties across country supporting decision.

What are farm laws?

Farmers' Produce Tre and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 aims at freeing  farmers from constraints of state Agriculture Produce Market Committees whereby y would be able to sell ir produce anywhere. Meanwhile,  Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 protects and empowers farmers to eng with processors, wholesalers, large retailers, exporters for farm services. This entails provision of contract farming. Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 specifies that supply of foodstuffs including cereals, pulses, potato, edible oilseeds, and oils shall be regulated only under exceptional circumstances.

What are farmers' concerns?

Farmers are of opinion that laws will affect MSP mechanism and APMC Mandi system. Moreover, with freeing of farm sector, farmers think y will be left to mercy of private sector entities. However, government has assured m that MSP and Mandi system will t be impacted and laws would allow farmers to sell ir produce outside of Mandis without involvement of middlemen and commission nts who take away a substantial chunk of revenue meant for farmers. However, farmers are still free to sell ir produce through conventional medium of Mandis system. government also contended that Agricultural Budget and MSP has only increased during Modi government keeping interest of farmers in mind.
