DMK, Kamal Haasan hail Madras HC's upholding Sterlite plant closure; say 'people win'

The Madras HC on Tuesday upheld the closure of the Sterlite Copper Plant in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi, refusing to allow the reopening of Vedanta-owned plant

Shortly after Madras HC upheld closure of Sterlite Copper Plant in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi, political leaders took to Twitter to laud judiciary for prioritising interests of citizens. " court ruling that Sterlite ban will continue is a justice found in sacrifice of many lives. I am someone who felt need for this judgment, I felt ir pain, up close. This is ar proof that voice of people will always win," said Makkal Needhi Maiam Chief and actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan. 

"I bow to judgment of High Court that denied permission to open Sterlite plant. I welcome court ruling. Cabinet resolution should be enacted and enacted! families of those shot for plant must also get justice!" said DMK President MK Stalin.

"Madras High Court has refused permission to reopen Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi. ruling makes it clear that growth that is available at cost of environment is dangerous," said DMK MP Kanimozhi.

Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi to remain shut

 Madras High Court on Tuesday prounced its verdict on petition challenging Tamil Nadu Government's decision to shut down  Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi refusing to allow reopening of Vedanta-owned plant. A division bench of Justices T S Sivagnanam and V Bhavani Subbaroyan prounced verdict, on petition filed by Vedanta Limited against State government's closure order against Sterlite Copper Plant on May 28, 2018. In addition to verdict, which came nearly 7 months after  court reserved its order, Madras HC also dismissed all or petitions filed by Vedanta on matter.

Tamil Nadu government advocated strongly against reopening of plant accusing company of polluting environment and groundwater in area. However,  shutting down of Sterlite Copper led to a serious short of mineral for copper-rich India, ultimately forcing country to export commodity since closure of plant in 2018.
