Trinamool refers to West Bengal as 'Bangla' in Mamata Banerjee's party website despite Centre's clarification over name change

Pushing the West Bengal government's move to rename the state to 'Bangla', Trinamool has released a news report titled - 'Bangla ahead of many States, says Economic Survey' on Tuesday, referring to the state as 'Bangla'

Trinamool refers to West Bengal as Bangla

The news article while speaking on the state's high ranking in terms of employment, agriculture, women’s empowerment, school education and rural roads as per the latest Economic Survey (for FY 2018-19), has referred to West Bengal as 'Bangla' 18 times.

Speaking about West Bengal's low unemployment rate, high jute production, higher women empowerment through women-centric schemes, population reduction, lower dropout rate and rural development, the news article has slammed the Centre's claims of West Bengal's lack of development, claiming that Trinamool's success in furthering 'Bangla's development'.

"Bangla under the Trinamool Congress Government has performed in a commendable manner and is contributing in a big way to the India growth story," states the article published by Bengali newspaper -Bartaman'.

Home Ministry denies WB change to 'Bangla' 

This referral to the state as 'Bangla' comes despite the Union Home Ministry denying the Centre's approval of the name change. Earlier on June 3, after CPI(M) MP Ritabrata Banerjee questioned the Centre's decision on renaming 'West Bengal' to 'Bangla' in the Rajya Sabha, on behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Minister of state Nityanand Rai said that the Centre had not given any consent to the West Bengal government to change the state's name.

He clarified that change in the name of the state requires Constitutional amendments. He added that the process of constitutional amendment takes into consideration other relevant factors.

Trinamool Government pushes for state's name change

In July 2018, the West Bengal Assembly passed a resolution recommending the name change. Earlier, MC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray wrote a letter to Rajya Sabha Secretary General Desh Deepak Verma urging the Centre to give its consent.

In his letter, he had claimed that the Central government should put into effect the passage of the resolution by the state assembly to 'restore the actual identity of the Bengali people'.
