West Bengal's eminent personalities oppose language imposition

Over 50 eminent personalities have called upon the people of West Bengal to give "due respect to all languages" and "resist any attempt to impose just one"

Over 50 eminent Bengali personalities from different walks of life have called upon people of West Bengal to give "due respect to all langus" and "resist any attempt to impose just one". Taking to Facebook, y issued a statement on Monday, urging people to register a strong protest against any bid to edge out Bengali langu from ir lives. Among signatories are poet Subodh Sarkar, poet- columnist Binayak Bandyophyay, elocutionists Urmimala Basu and Jagannath Basu and independent filmmaker Pripta Bhattacharya. social media statement was issued two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah pitched for a common langu in country and said it was Hindi which is spoken most and can unite country. 

Poet Subodh Sarkar on Hindi Imposition 

Apprehending that "a day may come in foreseeable future when our own langu, our mor tongue, our dearest Bengali langu will become threatened", it said that "intimidatory tactics" from certain quarters to impose one langu should be resisted. Sarkar, in a separate statement, said, "I respect Hindi langu. But I equally respect Malayali, Marathi, Konkani and all or langus spoken in this country."  langu can be greater or smaller, langu can be superior or inferior to ar, he insisted. "India is a country of multiple langus. But we should keep in mind mor tongue is true ration card of a citizen," he maintained.

Pointing out that Hindi has always been link langu across all sections of society, while English is primarily used by a particular section. Sarkar said, "What happened overnight that someone (Shah) h to declare 'one nation, one langu' slogan again!". Protests have erupted in several parts of country after Union home minister, in a series of tweets, called for 'one nation, one langu'.  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee h also said on Saturday that people should respect all langus and cultures but t at cost of ir mor tongue.

MK Stalin on Hindi Imposition 

Veteran leers such as Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President MK Stalin and former Karnataka Chief Ministers Siddaramaiah and HD Kumaraswamy have criticised Shah for his pitch on occasion of Hindi Diwas. MK Stalin said, "We should all be rey for ar anti-Hindi agitation just like what happened in 1937. Students, youngsters, and Tamil people should participate in this protest against Hindi imposition as this issue is about culture and langu". Moreover, leer said that DMK will bring toger all n-Hindi speaking states to join protest.
