Who is Lakshadweep's Administrator Praful Khoda Patel and why is he in a controversy?

Over past week, trouble has mounted for Lakshweep's ministrator over his decisions including altering of COVID SOPs leing to a surge in number of cases, ban on beef industry, lifting of ban on alcohol consumption and so on. From Left & Congress to even BJP unit of archipelago, political leers have come out in support of people of Lakshweep against 'authoritarian measures' imposed by ministrator Praful Khoda Patel since he assumed office on December 2, 2020. #SaveLakshweep campaign on social media has gared huge momentum over past few days, with politicians and netizens criticising ministrator and many going on to point out that Praful Khoda Patel was not a civil servant - first such to be appointed in Lakshweep ministrator's post. 

Who is Lakshweep ministrator Praful Khoda Patel?

Praful Khoda Patel is current ministrator of Lakshweep. A Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leer, Praful Khoda Patel kickstarted his career in electoral politics by becoming an MLA from Himatnagar constituency in Gujarat in 2007. In 2010, Praful Patel was roped by n Gujarat CM Narendra Modi to be in cabinet and was me Minister of State (MoS) Home of Gujarat in 2010. However, Praful Koda Patel suffered a loss in 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections. It is pertinent to point out that Praful Khoda Patel's far, Khodabhai Ranchhodbhai Patel, was an RSS functionary and enjoyed close ties with erstwhile Gujarat CM Modi. 

In 2016, Praful Khoda Patel was appointed as ministrator of Union Territory of Daman & Diu. After merger of Dra & Haveli with UT of Daman & Diu, Praful Khoda Patel became its first ministrator in January 2020. It is important to point out that position of ministrator was previously held by civil services officers (generally IAS) and that Praful Khoda Patel was first politician appointed to ministrator position. Praful Khoda Patel took charge as Lakshweep's ministrator in December 2020. 

Since 2019, Praful Koda Patel has been encumbered with a few controversies - beginning from Election Commission of India (ECI) notice to BJP leer for making a 'coercive request' to collector for Dra and Nagar Haveli Kannan Gopinathan.
