The heavy rainfall in Prayagraj has resulted in the swelling of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh. This situation has increased the chances of flooding and inundation in the low-lying areas of the city. The villages near the banks of the rivers are also partially submerged due to the relentless rainfall in Prayagraj. The stagnant water in a few areas of the region has also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This stagnancy is caused by the presence of plastic and slit in the drains.
Locals concerned over the flood-like situation
A local, Srijan Shrivastav, has said, "Heaps of garbage are lying outside our houses. Roads are blocked due to water and we were not able to go out of our houses. We are now shifting to some other places but there are people who are still trapped inside their houses.” Schools located in Prayagraj city were closed for three days starting September 19 in view of the developing situation. As many as 210 people were moved into relief camps near Ganganagar village in the district last week after water flooded into a few villages as rivers continue to swell. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) took to Twitter on September 15 and 16 to share the rescue operations that they have conducted in Prayagraj and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
Prevailing flood situation in UP and Bihar
Several parts of Bihar and Patna have witnessed a flood situation over the past few days. After the water level rose in the River Ganga, the water flooded the Ghats in Varanasi and the low-lying areas along the river. According to reports, people living in low-lying areas were evacuated and moved to relief camps. The Varanasi district administration had asked the police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to stay on a high alert until the situation got under control. Further reports stated that the NDRF team had rescued several people on Sunday. Reports state that the wooden logs kept for cremations in the lanes of Ganga River were seen floating in the floodwaters.
