On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak in the Rajya Sabha at around 2 pm. The Upper House of Parliament is hosting a special discussion ‘Role of Rajya Sabha in Indian Polity: Need for Reform’ to celebrate its 250th session. On this occasion, a silver coin of Rs.250 and a postal stamp of Rs.5 would also be released.
A unique opportunity
The PM attended an all-party meeting ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament on Sunday. In his remarks, he expressed his happiness on the special activities being planned to mark the 250th session of the Rajya Sabha. PM Modi emphasised that this would provide a unique opportunity to showcase the strengths of the Parliament as well as the Constitution. He reckoned that the Constitution had provided an overarching framework of governance institutions in a diverse country like India. Citing that it was the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the PM reckoned that this made the Rajya Sabha session an even more special occasion.
Rajya Sabha publication
Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu released a 118-page publication ‘Rajya Sabha: The Journey since 1952’ compiled by the secretariat of the Upper House on Sunday. It analyses the work done by the Upper House from its inception. Revealing that the Rajya Sabha passed 3,817 bills until the end of the 249th session, the publication mentions that 60 bills lapsed due to the dissolution of Lok Sabha. These bills pertained to several themes such as social change, economic transformation, education, environment and so forth.
