India’s leing Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) have criticised proposed uniform EPR framework floated by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. proposed framework is aimed at curtailing problem of packaging waste in country, in which PROs envisd to play a central role.

'Allows unfavourable competition'
y highlighted that PRO as an entity is t defined, allowing unfavourable competition in market. Snehal Jariwala, Technical Director, NEPRA Environmental Solutions said in a statement that document does t associate itself with ground reality while attempting to bring in transparency in EPR ecosystem. Jariwala said that it creates a whole new system without recognising and incorporating efforts alrey me since tification of PWM rules in 2016.
“This document is trying to shift it to government and confusing reers furr by bringing manufacturers of resins into ambient of EPR, which is t in line with successful EPR systems from across globe,” he ded.

Hanumant Saraf, Business He – Gemcorp Recycling and Techlogies, said that proposed framework covers only packaging materials, and neglect various single-use plastics like plastic pens, folders etc. which are also thrown away in millions every month. Saraf ded that framework does t define EPR for various s of packaging plastics.

“ government should introduce mandates which give waste an ecomic value hence internalization of this externality becomes lucrative for companies,” he said.
