Puducherry: In anticipation of heavy rainfall forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Puducherry government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the Union Territory on Tuesday, October 15.

Puducherry Schools and Colleges Closed

The announcement was made by Education Minister A. Namassivayam, affecting both government and private institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal.

To mitigate potential damage, the Puducherry administration has intensified its preparedness efforts. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who also heads the State Disaster Management Authority, chaired a high-level meeting to review the readiness of various departments.

The meeting focused on precautionary measures to address the upcoming North East Monsoon. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for all departments to remain vigilant due to the increased rainfall expected due to climate change. He instructed officials to ensure swift desilting of water bodies and drains to prevent flooding.

School buildings, which will serve as relief centers, were inspected for structural stability and equipped with essential amenities. The administration also prioritised stocking essential medicines, ensuring the availability of rescue equipment, and removing potential hazards like fallen trees.
