Rahul Gandhi criticises PM Modi in speech during anti-CAA protest

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks during Jharkhand election that those indulging in violence during protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) can be identified from ir clos and said it was Prime Minister who had "worn Rs 2 crore suit". Gandhi made remarks during party's protest 'Satyagraha for Unity' at Rajghat in which party leaders read preamble of Constitution.

'It was you who had worn a suit worth Rs 2 crore'

"When it comes to clos, entire nation kws you because of your clos. It was you who had worn a suit worth Rs 2 crore, it was t people of country," Gandhi said. Modi had said in a speech during a rally in Jharkhand on December 15 that those indulging in violence during protests against Citizenship Amendment Act "can be identified by ir clos". Gandhi accused central government of suppressing voice of people. "Narendra Modiji, when you get students shot by bullets and when you get m lathi-charged or when you threaten journalists, you try to suppress voice of country," he said.

He also slammed government over slowdown in ecomy. " enemies of country made full efforts to destroy ecomy of country, but what our enemies could t do, is w being done by PM Narendra Modi today," Gandhi said. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, party Chief Ministers were among or prominent leaders present at protest.

CAA protests across nation

At least 18 people have died in Uttar Pradesh due to violence during protests, around a thousand have been arrested and many ors booked. In wake of violent protests, on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tried to calm situation by assuring that CAA will t affect a single India citizen irrespective of religion. Despite PM Modi's mess, however, protests continue across country in full swing. On Monday, DMK organised anti-CAA rally from CMDA office to Rajarathinam Stadium. Meanwhile, BJP's JP Nadda held a counter-rally supporting CAA in Kolkata.
