Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held "fruitful" talks with his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya in Tokyo on Monday. Both sides have resolved to further deepen bilateral defence and strategic ties. Rajnath Singh also met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and conveyed to him India's commitment to further enhance defence engagements with Japan, officials said. The Defence Minister is currently on a five-day tour of Japan and South Korea and will be in Seoul on Tuesday.
India-Japan Defence Cooperation
Singh and Iwaya deliberated on the full spectrum of India-Japan defence cooperation at the annual Defence Ministerial dialogue.
Singh has said both sides will continue to work together to further deepen the defence ties. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation. Officials said both sides also deliberated on the overall situation in the Indo-Pacific region where China has been increasing its military presence. India, Japan, and the US have been part of the annual Malabar maritime exercise which is aimed at achieving greater inter-operability among the navies of the three countries. About his meeting with Abe, Singh said the meeting with the Japanese prime minister was "excellent".
Singh also said that regular interactions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Abe put the special strategic and global partnership between India-Japan on a higher pedestal. "It has added a new strategic depth to our defence cooperation," he said.
Rajnath Singh's South Korea agenda
In South Korea, Singh will hold a bilateral dialogue with Jeong Kyeong-Doo, Minister of National Defence. He will also call on South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-Yon. A CEO's Forum followed by a Business-to-Government (B2G) meeting will also be held in Seoul with the participation of members of defence industry from both sides with the aim to encourage India-ROK defence industry cooperation.
"The focus of the visit to South Korea will be to explore new areas of defence cooperation including co-development of military hardware," the official said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited South Korea in February during which both the countries decided to strengthen strategic ties.
