RBI selects vendor for developing mobile app for visually impaired

RBI on September 6 h told Bombay High Court that an internet connection would t be required for its proposed mobile application which would help visually impaired people identify currency tes. As many as 16 vendors h shown interest in developing mobile phone-based application and five me to "final ranking", said an RBI document. Daffodil Software Pvt Ltd has been selected to develop application, it ded. At present, banktes in deminations of Rs 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 2,000 are in circulation, besides Re 1 tes issued by Centre.

Identification of bankte demination is key to successful completion of cash-based transactions by visually impaired persons. Intaglio printing based identification marks for helping visually challenged in identification of banktes demination are present in tes of Rs 100 and above. After demonetization of old Rs 500/1,000 tes in vember 2016, new banktes in design and sizes have been put in circulation.

" Reserve Bank of India has been sensitive to challenges faced by visually challenged in conducting ir day to day business with Indian banktes," central bank h said while scouting for a vendor to develop mobile application.

In June 2018, central bank h stated that it would explore feasibility of developing a suitable device or mechanism for aiding visually impaired in identification of Indian banktes.
