Brief look at Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's exemplary life:

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, born in1931 in Rameshwaram, rose to great heights in the field of science and technology, reshaping India's space program with his futuristic vision. After completing his aeronautic engineering from Madras Institute of Technology in 1958, Kalam rose speedily in India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) producing several successful missile programs earning the moniker 'Missile Man'.

He also held a brief stint in the Indian Space Research Organisation where he helmed India's first indigenously designed and produced satellite launch vehicle -SLV-III.

Delving into the political side, he was India's principal scientific adviser with the rank of a cabinet minister (199-2001) unfurling India's technological vision for 2020 after India's first nuclear weapons test.

He rose to national fame when he was sworn in as India's 11th President and transformed the nation's approach to science and technology during his tenure (2002-2007). Kalam wrote several books with his autobiography -'Wings of Fire' and 'Ignited Minds' inspiring millions. Among his numerous awards were two of the country’s highest honours - the Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the Bharat Ratna (1997). 

The great teacher, collapsed suddenly while delivering a lecture in July 2015, and then breathed his last on July 27, 2015.
