External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at premises of Indian embassy in Moscow. statue was unveiled on occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. S Jaishankar arrived in Russia on Tuesday on a two-day visit to finalise preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to country. This is Jaishankar's first visit to Moscow since assuming office in May. His visit comes days ahe of Eastern Ecomic Forum in Vlivostok from September 4 to 6 where Prime Minister Modi will be chief guest.

Mahatma Gandhi was profoundly inspired and influenced by Russian writer-philosopher Leo Tolstoy. two leers never met personally in ir life-time, but both shared an unique bond and exchanged ideas through letters.  In his autobiography, Gandhi has written how Tolstoy's book, ' Kingdom of God is Within You', which he re on October 1, 1904, during a train journey from Johannesburg to Durban in South Africa, changed his life. He was so deeply impressed with book that he wrote a letter to Tolstoy on October 1, 1909, and maintained correspondence with him reafter. book, Gandhi wrote, me a deeper impression on him, and opened his vision to infinite possibilities of universal love.  correspondence between Tolstoy and Gandhi became epoch-making in golden chapter of Indo-Russian relations.

On his visit to Moscow, S Jaishankar held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov. A series of issues were discussed. Apart from that, ecomic cooperation between two countries was also discussed.
