Kolkata: The Kolkata Police on Tuesday filed a corruption case against Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A SIT (Special Investigation Team) has been formed to investigate financial irregularities at the state-run hospital, which have been under scrutiny since a complaint was lodged in June.

The West Bengal government issued a notification yesterday, escalating the probe by forming the SIT to delve into the allegations that have plagued RG Kar Medical College and Hospital since 2021. The team, headed by Inspector General Pranab Kumar, includes top officials such as Deputy Inspector General Syed Waquar Raza, DIG Soma Mitra Das of the CID, and Deputy Commissioner Indira Mukherjee of the Kolkata Police.

This team has been tasked with investigating financial misconduct during Ghosh's tenure. Ghosh, who resigned as Principal just days after the rape and murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor inside the hospital on August 9, has been under scrutiny by the CBI and questioned for nearly 53 hours over the past four days regarding his actions following the doctor's death.

The corruption case against the former Principal has surfaced amid widespread outrage following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the college. Dr. Ghosh, whose tenure has been marked by multiple controversies, including accusations of failing to ensure adequate security and allegations of financial misconduct, has been under intense scrutiny.

His controversial actions, such as resigning and being swiftly reinstated to a new position, have drawn sharp criticism from the Calcutta High Court, which ordered him to take indefinite leave. The case has been further complicated by serious allegations from his former neighbors about domestic abuse.

The West Bengal government has responded to the situation by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the corruption allegations, focusing on financial misconduct during Dr. Ghosh's tenure. The SIT's formation comes at a time when the medical community is already in turmoil, with nationwide protests demanding justice for the murdered doctor.

As the investigation progresses, Dr. Ghosh's controversial past and the state government's handling of the case are under the spotlight, raising broader questions about accountability and justice in the state's healthcare system.
