SC directs Centre to transfer Assam's NRC coordinator Hajela to MP

The Supreme Court Friday directed the Centre and the Assam government to transfer "forthwith" the state's NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela to Madhya Pradesh

Supreme Court Friday directed Centre and Assam government to transfer "forthwith" state's National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Prateek Hajela to Mhya Presh for maximum period possible. Hajela, a native of Mhya Presh and a 1995 batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cre, was appointed NRC coordinator by top court to oversee mammoth and sensitive exercise of finalising and publication of Assam NRC data. A special bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices S A Bobde and R F Nariman ordered inter-cre transfer of Hajela on deputation to his native state for a maximum possible period.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for Centre, sought to kw reason behind unprecedented order of top court, to which CJI responded, "can any order be passed without a cause or reason". bench, however, did t specify cause or reason for passing order, leing to speculation that officer might be apprehending some kind of threat after overseeing gigantic and sensitive task of finalising Assam NRC.  top court has w posted petitions on Assam NRC for furr hearing on vember 26. CJI, who hails from Assam, is demitting office on vember 17. 

much-awaited updated final NRC was released on August 31, this year excluding names of over 19 lakh applicants in state. A total of 3,30,27,661 people h applied to be included in NRC. Of m, 3,11,21,004 have been included in document and 19,06,657 excluded. names of 1.9 crore people were published as Part Draft NRC on midnight of December 31, 2017.

On July 23 this year, apex court h extended deline for publication of final NRC by a month to August 31 and h rejected pleas of Centre and state government seeking permission for 20 per cent sample re-verification.  Centre and state government h claimed that names of Indian citizens were excluded and illegal Bangleshi migrants were included in draft.  y h also referred to apex court's 2018 order by which it h said it could consider a re-verification of 10% of people who were included in draft NRC.  Assam, which h faced an influx of people from Banglesh since early 20th century, is only state having an NRC, which was first prepared in 1951.
